Value Worksheet

Explore how substance use affects your values

Read-only — this is a reference guide. Nothing you enter is stored on our servers.

Values serve as guides for us. They provide a framework for how we live our lives. In substance misuse, values are often compromised — the substance use takes priority over beliefs we feel are important to us.

Values that are important to me

List the values that matter most to you in a personal notebook — for example: honesty, family, health, responsibility, creativity, financial security, self-respect.

How substance use conflicted with my values

Identify the value and the behavior that conflicted with it.

For each value, describe the behavior that substance misuse conflicted with — for example, the value of honesty conflicted with hiding your use from the people you love.

Specific events where conflicts took place

Recall specific events and describe what transpired — a family dinner, a missed obligation, a broken promise. Writing them down shows the real cost of continued use.

Reflect: Has substance misuse caused problems in areas of life that are highly valued? Can you continue to use without continuing to compromise your values?
